easyJet
It has been reported that the Portuguese government is planning to open the airline market so that airline companies can operate between Madeira and the mainland Portugal. Until now these connections were considered to be a public service that only Portuguese companies had the privilege to participate. Now it seems that from May this year low cost airliners such as easyJet will be able to operate between the Madeira Islands and mainland.

Where does this information come from? Just curious to know if it is really going to happen or not…
Probably in May we´ll have good news about this
Reported in yesterdays Diário that negotiations were still ongoing, but that Easyjet was likely to be running daily services from Stansted, and weekly services from Bristol, Manchester and somewhere else I can’t recall.
Thanks I will see if I can find more info about this. Or if somebody else has more news …. please mail me.
I’ve been living here for more than 2 yrs now and all that ever happens is talk, talk, talk.. I’ve also heard from colleagues that talk of a low cost airline has been going on for more than 5 yrs. So don’t get your hope up everyone, this is more a politica issue than anything else.
As from the 29th of October 2007 , with the arrival of the first scheduled (daily) Easy Jet flight from Stansted , an estimated extra 100,000 or more visitors a year, will visit Madeira.
After being exploited for decades by the national airline , the sky to Madeira is now open to other airlines. This is the single most important event on Madeira since the island gained limited autonomy from Portugal in 1976.Madeira will now take its rightful place as one of the most sought after destinations in Europe on an equal transport cost footing to other destinations.Delighted!
