On this day, the main streets in the centre of Funchal will be invaded by lights of all sizes and colours to produce designs that are very representative of the island’s symbology and the time of year. One week later, on 30 November, the outskirts of Funchal will also be lit up transforming Funchal into a real, life-size “nativity scene”.
In early December, the squares are decked with flowers. Poinsettias, holly and lady’s slipper orchids all help to brighten up the city’s streets. And then there are the Christmas carols ringing out in all the streets as if by magic inspiring everyone with the festive spirit. The streets fill with people in this atmosphere of great joy. Some are here to do their Christmas shopping, while others just want to enjoy the holiday buzz and atmosphere emanating throughout the city.

On the 23rd of November the charismatic Portuguese fado singer Mariza will perform at the Madeira Technopolo in a joint concert with the Classical Orchestra of Madeira.
Mariza Reus Nunes, born in Mozambique but with the soul moulded in Mouraria, has achieved successes with performances in Central Park in New York, in the Centro Cultural de Belém, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, in the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris in House of Music in Moscow, in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, among other stages in successive tours in Europe and North America.
The fado thrives on sorrow, and anybody brave enough to sing it must possess saudade, a Portuguese term meaning “longing.†But more importantly, the singer must genuinely expose his/her soul … and Mariza has proven that she has a plentiful supply of saudade, never failing to captivate audiences on her worldwide tours.

I do have ways to get a quick overview, for example through thumbnails of these images and in a few minutes glancing I have a good idea which images are worth looking at.
A great part of these images can be found at Flickr.com. Most of these photos I think that they are fantastic. These I have added to my favorites … of which you can see a slideshow of next. Do not worry …. it is only over 200 pictures … Continue reading “The Best Madeira photos”
